Windmill Information: Two members from the Mad River windmill project attended the meeting to give members an update on the project and take questions from the membership. The project reps talked about the met towers going up and the plans for the windmills. Final numbers of windmills will be determined by the met data they receive over the next two years. At most they said there would be about 100 windmills involved in this project. The power lines will be run south out of the property on overhead lines to meet up with existing 345 kv towers about 20 miles to the south. The total height of the towers and blades will be around 500 feet. The land around the tower will be cleared and accessible. Some members are already suggesting opportunities for food plots. The project will be upgrading the roads and providing additional access to some areas of the property to allow crane access. They said tower construction might begin by May of 2019. The project reps said they would return at the September Mad river club meeting to discuss the progress of the project.

MRC WEBPAGE: A reminder to club members to subscribe to the webpage. There are no subscription fees. As a subscriber to the website you will automatically be sent an update message so you can be made aware of any club news updates. As I get information from the board between meetings I post it to the webpage.

EDITORIAL: As newsletter editor I am beginning my request to all members to go paperless on the newsletter. I am shooting for January1st, 2018 to stop sending out the newsletter. I would very much like to see everyone use the website. The website contains a lot of club information along with the newsletters. Please note that the newsletters are archived on the website. If we were to go paperless this would save the club approximately $1000.00 a year in postage cost. I understand some people have reservations about using a computer but we need to make an effort to change. Remember the webpage is: madriverclub.com

ANNUAL GUN RAFFLE: The drawing will start September 1st 2017. All members, this is a major fundraiser for the club so we need to have all members participate. Tickets will be available at the June, July, and August meetings. You can call Greg Masselli at 315-952-1624 or email gmaselli@comfortsystemsusa.com to request tickets to be mailed to you if you cannot attend a meeting. Please return all ticket stubs and checks to Greg by August 21st 2017. You can hand them in at a meeting or mail them to Greg at :

Mad River Club

P.O Box 53

Baldwinsville, NY 13027

Members with ticket sales of 30 or more will be entered into an independent drawing at the September meeting for a Savage Axis Scope package with choice of caliber in .270, 22-250, 25-06 or 7mm-08. Along with this, members who sold 30 or more tickets will get credit for their workday. Also, the member who sells the most tickets will receive a $250.00 gift certificate from Sharpshooters. If there is a tie the money will be split.

Annual Trout Derby: The derby will take place on June 24th. Joseph Iauco is the chairman for this event. I talked to Joe about this event and he encourages everyone to bring out their young outdoor enthusiasts and catch some fish. Joe said people should just go out and fish anywhere in the area and come back to the clubhouse with their catch between 12:00 and 12:30 for measurements. He said prizes will be awarded to all participants and dinner of hotdogs, salad and drinks will be provided by the club. Sounds like a good time for all. Any questions please call Joseph Iauco at 487-7193.

Oswego County Federation report: Chuck Parker said there are many items on the table for our representatives to consider. Please check out the Oswego County Federation website to gain information about some of the issues concerning sportsmen/sportswomen. Chuck said the federation is looking for people to become involved in the Federation. They have some openings that need to be filled. Also, Chuck reminded the club the Oswego County Fair is in August and he is looking for volunteers to man the Federation booth.

Ken and Gerry Burd Environmental Studies Scholarship

The extended family of Ken and Gerry Burd has instituted a scholarship fund, in their name, in the amount of $500.00 to be awarded yearly. This year we would like to invite any member, member’s child or grandchild contemplating an Environmental degree, to apply.

The recipient must be a graduating high school senior or currently enrolled college student, pursuing a degree in Environmental Engineering, Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Law Enforcement, Agricultural Engineering or other closely related Environmental field.

The Selection Committee will award the scholarship based on academic performance, school and community activities/involvement, 2 letters of recommendation and

a short essay regarding their choice of profession.

Applications are available by contacting Ken or Gerry at 315-652-7095, kburd1@verizon.net, or at the address below.

All requested information must be postmarked no later than April 1st of the current year.

Please complete and return the application to:

Ken & Gerry Burd

MRC WEBPAGE: A reminder to club members to subscribe to the webpage. There are no subscription fees. As a subscriber to the website you will automatically be sent an update message so you can be made aware of any club news updates. As I get information from the board between meetings I post it to the webpage.

Deer Report: There was very little deer report given at this past meeting. All members need to be aware that our lease land prices have gone up considerably. At some point we may have to make some hard decisions regarding what lands to keep. This would be a lot easier if people would speak up and let the club know which lands are the best for hunting and fishing.

SPECIAL NOTICE: DUE TO GOOD FRIDAY WE ARE RESCHEDULING THE APRIL GENERAL MEETING TO FRIDAY, APRIL 7TH. THE BOD MEETING WILL BE MARCH 31ST

NYSCC REPORT: Chuck Parker gave us an update on the Kendall Tract land that was part of the
Stave Mills Sportsman’s Club. Chuck described how this land had changed hands several times over the years and, as one of our long term members pointed out, without the knowledge of the Stave Mills club. Luckily for the Stave Mills club they were able to keep their clubhouse and purchase 5 acres around the clubhouse. Chuck Parker pointed out that it took considerable effort to keep this club alive. Chuck has consistently asked people to stay informed and get involved, even if its just writing to your representatives. Make no mistake; we could lose our lease lands. Chuck urged people to subscribe to the Grass Roots News so people can stay informed. For more information you can go to

www.nyscc.com and use PayPal to join or you can get a copy of the Grass Roots News for an application.

MRC Elections: This is a reminder that the club elections are coming up at the April 7th general meeting. There are many positions that need to be filled. We have 3 board positions open and many officers want to step down. Nominations for these positions will close at the March meeting. Please get involved. This is a great way to learn how this club operates and to help keep it going.

EDITORIAL : Several board members are stepping down this year as they have been in these positions for many years. Most have been actively involved in the club in various capacities for many years. We have many new members. Between Gold, ½ dues members and full dues members, we have almost 400 people in this club. So we should be able to have someone step up. As noted above, the Ice fishing derby was cancelled because we cannot get anyone to chair it. This is a loss of revenue to the club of between $1000 to 2000 dollars. People stepping down this year are Mark Bishop (Secretary), Kent Taber (1st VP). The newsletter editor would also like to step down. These are just some examples of positions we need to fill. Along with this, we are having a very hard time filling various event chairs. We have not had a family picnic in years due to no interest in someone organizing it. The Annual Awards banquet needs a chair. The Christmas party needs a chair. These are just some examples that are out there waiting. If you really enjoy this club then we need to have some new people step up and take an interest in keeping this club going. Elections are coming up in April so please think about helping the club and take an active part in keeping it going. If interested in any position you can contact any board member to submit your name.

Work Days: Hunting season is here, so please make plans to get in your workday before the end of October when they close the book on 2016 workdays.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Some changes are starting to occur on the Little John property. The landowner recently sat down with the club president and 1st vice president and discussed the possibility of placing windmills on the lease property. Currently land has been cleared on Earls trail and Shelmindine trail to build two meteorological towers to do a feasibility study for the placement of the windmills. From the discussion it may take up to a year to do this feasibility study and then the construction of windmills would begin. The landowners assured the president the workers would not be allowed to hunt or fish on our lease land. The landowners also assured Dave Dano and Kent Taber keeping the Mad River Club on this land was a big priority. The board understands the membership will have many questions regarding this venture. Please understand that this is very recent news to the board and as information is obtained the board will surely pass this along. You can send the newsletter editor emails with questions and I will try to get answers.

HARD SIDED CAMPS: The landowner has told the MRC that it will only allow hard sided camps to be placed on Camp Road #1. Apparently the landowners have experienced problems on some of their other properties were too many camps were built and than left abandoned making a mess for them.

MRC BUDGET: The board will go over the 2017 budget at the October meeting.

REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS: It is now hunting season so the ATV rules have changed. We are now limited to 1 member and 1 guest. Please be considerate of other members as people transition into the hunting season. We’ve enjoyed a great summer for ATV usage and now its time to get in the woods to hunt and respect others that are hunting. Thanks.

MRC Trap Club The club needs a trap chairman to take over the use of the trap house. The club has spent a lot of money getting this up and running. So far people who have used the trap house really enjoy it. If anyone is interested in being a chairman please let a board member know. A committee will be formed and the club expects that local schools will be using our range and that we will form an MRC team to shoot against other clubs.

GUN LOTTERY: Mark Bishop said the club sold all the raffle tickets this year. This is the first year we have sold all the tickets. This is a major moneymaker for the club so please give Mark a big thanks for all his and his wife’s work with this annual event. The final total and prizes will be discussed at the October

meeting.

3 D Archery Shoot: Bill Killam put out that we had a great turnout for this event. 32 club members showed up to help and compete. Bill did a lot of work for this event so please give him a big thanks as this event is another major money maker for the club.

4 Wheeler event: Steve Corsette said he cooked over 170 chickens and the turnout was great. I know the weather was great and everyone had a great time. The food was great. Thanks to Steve and his team for another great event.

Also, do not get into a confrontation with people even if they are trespassing. Just get a name if possible or record the license plate number and give it to security.

The people in the current positions have been in these positions many years and are looking to step down. If you can help please let a board member know.

ANNUAL 4 WHEELER WEEKEND: This event will be held the weekend of August 20th. This event is an opportunity for everyone to come together, ride ATVs and enjoy the club. Steve Corsette is running this event and will be serving a chicken BBQ at 5:00pm on Camp Road 1. The chicken dinner will cost $5.00 apiece this year and Steve is asking everyone to make reservations before August 10th. Steve is asking everyone to bring a dish to pass and you must supply your own beverage. For reservations please call Steve at 623-9429

IMPORTANT NOTICE : The club members voted to keep the Tsueda Property. The lease land committee is continuing to look for more southern tier property.

YOUR ATV privileges ARE IN jeopardy

Recent issues with atvs on the club:

A member recently had 11 4 wheelers on the club with them. As a member you are only allowed 5 machines with you. This is clearly in the rules.

People have torn down the red fencing around the gravel pits and taken down the sign. The gravel pits are off limits for riding per the landowner.

People have given attitude when challenged to provide proof of membership. This should not even be an issue. We all need to show proof and use this as a chance to meet other members.

The landowners have expressed a concern that we are abusing our ATV privileges on club property. Apparently people have been using excessive speed, (cutting “rooster” tails on the roads), cutting new trails though the woods, or around large mud holes. People are cutting trails to their tree stands. There are still people driving through the rivers and streams where there is no limestone laid down. Please do not underestimate the landowner’s displeasure with the club.

So our Club Rules as well as the landowner’s rules are as follows:

25mph is the speed limit on the club. DO NOT cut up the road by doing “doughnuts” or making “rooster tails”

No trails to tree stands. Also, loosen tree stand straps at the end of the season or take the stands down.

NO NOT ride through any streams or rivers unless there is limestone laid down for the crossing.

If you can’t ride through a mud hole then turn around and go back. DO NOT GO AROUND THEM.

Bobs trail is closed

I cannot stress enough the importance of using good land stewardship while riding on the MRC lease lands. Riding ATVs on lease lands is a privilege not a right. New signs are going up to help ensure we conform to the landowner’s wishes.

Annual Gun Raffle: If you have any unsold tickets please contact Mark Bishop so they can get sold.

CONTACT Mark Bishop at 288-4248 or markbrv4@aol.com for tickets if you can’t make the July meeting.

A CALL TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE MAD RIVER CLUB: We have several board positions that will be vacated next year. Along with this, several of our annual event chairmen are stepping down such as the annual awards banquet, Christmas dinner, gun raffle and archery shoot. The people doing these jobs now have been doing these jobs for many years and want to take a much-needed break. I have noted over the last several years there have been little or no challenges to board positions or committee chairman during the annual elections. We no longer have an annual MRC picnic because we cannot get anyone to chair it. It is a constant struggle by the board to fill positions on the board to keep this club moving. I know people really enjoy the club and all it has to offer, but the reason it has so much to offer is due to the tireless work of a relatively few people. The club needs its members to step to the plate and help out. Make no mistake; we can lose this club to apathy and a lack of participation. I challenge anyone to find a club that offers so much for so little club dues. So, please take a moment to see where you can help out.

Important DEC Hunting Course Information: All the hunting classes will be posted on the DEC website. Also, a new program will be homework for the hunting classes prior to participation. Due to the amount of material covered at the hunter safety classes, the DEC felt it would be helpful to have class participants complete an online homework assignment prior to attending the hunter safety class. This homework will be posted on the DEC website and will be required to be completed prior to attending a class. Gary Crawford, said an instructor could refuse attendance if the homework in not completed.

MRC WEBPAGE: A reminder to club members to subscribe to the webpage. There are no subscription fees. As a subscriber to the website you will automatically be sent an update message so you can be made aware of any club news updates. As I get information from the board between meetings I post it to the webpage. IF POSSIBLE PLEASE START REFERING TO THE WEBPAGE FOR NEWSLETTERS AND INFORMATION. PEOPLE CONTINUE TO ASK FOR NEWSLETTERS SENT TO THEM. I WOULD LIKE FOR EVERYONE TO AT LEAST TRY THE WEBPAGE. IF WE COULD GET EVERYONE TO USE THE WEBPAGE AND GET RID OF MAILING THE NEWSLETTER WE COULD SAVE THE CLUB ABOUT $1000.00 A YEAR.

Pictures: I encourage people to send me pictures of various club events so I can get them posted on the webpage.

MRC Trap Club The club needs a trap chairman to take over the use of the traphouse. The club has spent a lot of money getting this up and running. So far people who have used the traphouse really enjoy it. If anyone is interested in being a chairman please let a board member know. Steve is asking everyone to bring a dish to pass and you must supply your own beverage. For reservations please call Steve at 623-9429

IMPORTANT NOTICE : A vote to drop or keep the Tseuda Property in the southern tier will be done at the August meeting. The lease comes due in September. The lease for this land doubled last year and we have had mixed reports on this land as far as hunting is concerned. If anyone has ideas for southern tier property please let the board know.

A Fisher Plan will again be coming out for review

Blue Ribbon Panel Plan- If it happens, it would make up to 60 million available to NYS DEC. Source of revenue would be from land oil production. It would require 25% matching by the state. (this is a Federal Program)

Annual 3D MRC Archery Shoot: This shoot is a 40-target Modified IBO shoot. The dates are Saturday and Sunday July 30th and 31st. There is a Friday night fish fry on July 29th that starts at 5pm and goes to 7pm. The shoot is open to the public and entry fees range from $20.00 for teens and adults, to $5.00 for cubs. Registration for both days goes from 8 am to 10 am. There will be food, raffles and drawings each day. Also, vendors will be setting up on site. For further information you can contact Bill Killam at (315) 387-3350

AWARD: Kevin Irwin, our building and grounds chairman, was awarded a plaque that will dedicate the new trap house to him. Kevin has put in many hours, (numbering in the hundreds of hours) over his tenure as the B&G chairman and our clubhouse shows it. Kevin and his small group built the new trap house and picked up the new trap thrower and mounted it and now it is up and running. Please congratulate and thank Kevin for a job well done. Please note, that Kevin is moving to New Mexico and he will be greatly missed.

Archery Fund Raiser: The ads are out for the support of the Annual Archery shoot. Please use the advertised businesses if possible to help promote continued ad usage. Bill Killam had the raffle prizes on display at the last meeting. They included a new Matthews bow (main raffle) and other prizes such as a custom built fishing rod, outdoor prints, pressure washer, tree stands. Bill Killam needs all the help he can get to make this event successful. This event has become a major moneymaker for the club and is well attended so please let Bill know if you can help. His number is at the bottom of the newsletter.

MRC Trap Club The club had a trap shoot before the last meeting to introduce members to the new trap house and thrower. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it. Kevin Irwin is running another shoot before the next meeting on July 8th. He will start the shoot at 4:00pm and you can learn how to run the trap machine. The club is asking that you contact a range master to run the machine for you if you have not been trained on the machine. The list of range masters is on our webpage under the title “The Trap house”. The club has spent a lot of money getting this machine and Kevin Irwin has done an outstanding job getting this up and running so please come and enjoy the trap range.

ITEMS OF INTEREST:

If you are on club property and see a culvert starting to clog up please take a rake or whatever tool you have and keep the culvert open.

SECURTIY: The security chairman discussed the continued problem of trespassers on our club. They are going around our gates and using our land. We need to wear our badges when on the property and to challenge each other on our membership status. Please do this respectfully and use it as a chance to meet new members. Also, do not get into a confrontation with people even if they are trespassing. Just get a name if possible or record the license plate number and give it to security.

MRC Gates: All the gates are open with the exception of the West gate located off the Old State Road. This gate is staying closed due to logging.

YOUR ATV privileges ARE IN jeopardy

Recent issues with atvs on the club:

A member recently had 11 4 wheelers on the club with them. As a member you are only allowed 5 machines with you. This is clearly in the rules.

The landowners have expressed a concern that we are abusing our ATV privileges on club property. People are cutting trails to their tree stands. There are still people driving through the rivers and streams where there is no limestone laid down. Please do not underestimate the landowner’s displeasure with the club.

So our Club Rules as well as the landowner’s rules are as follows:

NO NOT ride through any streams or rivers unless there is limestone laid down for the crossing.

If you can’t ride through a mud hole then turn around and go back. DO NOT GO AROUND THEM.

Bobs trail is closed

I cannot stress enough the importance of using good land stewardship while riding on the MRC lease lands. Riding ATVs on lease lands is a privilege not a right. New signs are going up to help ensure we conform to the landowner’s wishes.
